She awoke to the languid knowledge that something radical had changed in her life. Turning on to her back, she stretched lithely, sinking back into the warm covers with a contented smile playing about her lips.

Then she was still, the accidental movement of her hand meeting with warm and naked human flesh, sending her into a moment's paralysis of shock. Then she turned her head, saw Jay's dark one sleeping peacefully next to her, and remembrance came flooding back with a dark flush of horror staining her cheeks.

'God in heaven! ' she breathed, too stunned to do anything but stare at him. What had she done?

He looked relaxed and contented, more like the Jay she used to know with the layers of cynicism wiped away from his face. Her heart flipped, then settled into a quivering lump in her breast. And tears, mourning what had once been, slid silently from her eyes.

She loved him, she accepted achingly. Totally and irrevocably, she loved, had loved, and always would love him. And the knowledge left her feeling bleak and lonely, because she now knew that, no matter what Jay threw at her in the way of pain and grief, he could never kill her feelings for him, because they were such a strong and innate part of her being.

And maybe that was why she'd run away all those years ago. Not because his father had frightened her into it. And not because her mother had supported everything Cedric Lorence had said. But because Jay had denounced her, and she knew that she would never be able to come face to face with his rejection and survive it.

Did that mean she would allow him to inflict any kind of pain on her and always manage to forgive him? Probably, she accepted with the bitter taste of self-condemnation filling her mouth.

His eyes flicked open, bright shining blue revealing instant recall.

'Why?' she demanded.

He smiled, not even trying to misunderstand her, and hauled himself up on to his elbow to look mockingly down on her. 'I want my son,' he said simply. 'At any price, but preferably by the easiest route possible. You are that route, Rebecca. Through the mother I gain the son.' He reached out to touch a fingertip to the corner of her soft mouth, his eyes drawn down to watch the uncontrollable way her lips quivered for him, and he smiled with dry satisfaction.

'You—you planned this?' she said, appalled that he could be so cunningly ruthless.

'What do you think I was doing on that long journey down here?' His eyes flicked up to mock her. 'Plotting your quick demise?' Her look said that that was exactly what she had thought he was doing, and he smiled wryly. 'I'm not a fool, Rebecca, though I know you damned well think me one. The gentlest way to gain my son is through you. You have to be on my side to make his acceptance of me easier—for both of us.'

She frowned, not understanding. 'I don't see how seducing me gains you that support.
